***I Combine shipping--Media Mail, lowest rate, packed with CARE!*** " The Complete Early Recordings of Skip James ". CD. 1930, 1994. Yazoo Label, Shanachie Records . Original 12 page insert, good. No time, but around 60 minutes. Yazoo Catalogue 2009. Born in 1902 in Yazoo Georgia, Nehemiah Curtis Jamesis described on the cover of this CD as "Perhaps the Strangest, most complex and bizarre of all Mississippi Blues artists, James is also one of the greatest". He grew up on a plantation where his mother was the cook, and picked up guitar at 16, about the time he left home to work as a lumber grader in Arkansas. It was in Weona Arkansas that he "fell under the sway of a middle-aged whorehouse pianist named Will Crabtree"...more about his life & career in the 12 page insert included. James worked as lumberman, laborer, professional gambler, bootlegger, and musician. The pity of his life is what he could have achieved without Jim Crow, a fact he was fully aware of. A virtuoso on guitar and piano--after reading about his life one can't but believe that all emotion you hear comes from a real and often tough and scary place. Keep in mind these are remastered recordings from 78 records from the 1920's and 30's, so there's some hiss and such. You're listening to a slice of time here.
